Like other technology devices, iDrive has gone through several progressive stages. Over time, more features have been added to the iDrive system, and the visual interface has been modernized and improved. Whereas older iDrive versions featured menus to scroll through, the latest iterations include layouts made up of dynamic tiles. As well as looking more contemporary, these layouts also make it easier to get the information you need at a glance.

The major iDrive versions are CCC, CIC, NBT, NBT Evo and MGU. Other head units, including CHAMP, EntryNav and EntryNav Evo, have also existed simultaneously, generally as an entry-level option.

Thanks to the changes made to the interface from one iDrive version to the next, distinguishing between different generations is usually simple. As each iDrive version largely replaced its predecessor, you can also get an idea of which iDrive version you have by looking up your vehicle’s model and production year. Can BMW iDrive software be updated?

Most BMWs will still feel pretty fresh even a decade after production, but the same probably can’t be said of iDrive. Technology moves so quickly that it only takes a few years for a system to start lagging behind, so the iDrive in your brand new BMW could be outdated in a few key areas before your lease is up.

One area where issues come up particularly quickly is smartphone connectivity. With each year’s models from the likes of Apple and Samsung adding more new features, it’s likely that your old iDrive won’t be compatible with everything your phone has to offer. In newer BMWs, for example, after pairing your smartphone with your car it’s possible to call Siri or Google Assistant using the voice command button on the steering wheel. Older vehicles, produced before the rise of virtual assistants, won’t have that feature available.

In some cases, a simple BMW iDrive software update could be enough, if there’s a compatibility issue between your existing BMW and a new smartphone. Your dealer may be able to update your iDrive firmware next time you take your car in for a service.

In other cases, though, the only way to update your BMW iDrive system is by replacing it with a new and improved version. Apple CarPlay, for example, was launched in 2014, and only made it to BMWs for 2017. A software update won’t be able to add CarPlay support, but retrofitting a CarPlay-compatible iDrive head unit in your BMW will. These kinds of iDrive updates are not offered by BMW, but a third-party company like BimmerTech can help with a full BMW iDrive upgrade.

How to upgrade iDrive head unit hardware?

Retrofitting a new iDrive head unit can let you access all the latest features in your older BMW. Depending on your vehicle and its current hardware, as well as the iDrive version you intend to upgrade to, you may need to replace the whole iDrive system, or just a few components. Upgrade from CCC to CIC requires for example a complete hardware upgrade, including the head unit, screen, iDrive controller and trim. Upgrading from NBT Evo ID4 to NBT Evo ID5/ID6, is on the other hand comparatively simple, as you may be able to retain several parts of your existing iDrive system. Making a more substantial jump will require far more extensive changes.

How to update maps on BMW iDrive?

Navigation is a key part of the iDrive system, making it easy to get from A to B. Roads and points of interest change all the time, though, so to make the most of your iDrive, it’s important to keep your BMW’s GPS maps updated.

Many of the latest BMWs include over-the-air (OTA) map updates, automatically downloading the latest map data using the car’s built-in SIM card. In these cars, the process is similar to updating your smartphone to the latest iOS or Android version — your iDrive will download the data, and you’ll only need to restart your car.

Vehicles that do not support OTA updates will require a manual upgrade. In the past, BMW navigation maps had to be updated by switching a DVD containing the map data. More recent cars store the data on a built-in hard drive, letting you update your map by overwriting the data on the hard drive. BMW lets you do this by inserting a USB stick with the new map data into your car’s USB port.

Before buying a new BMW map, it’s good to check which map version you require, which depends on your iDrive system. With your iDrive navigation open, use the settings menu to scroll to «Navigation system version», where you will see the region, version and year of your current GPS data.

How to code BMW iDrive?

How to get text messages on BMW iDrive?

Connecting your smartphone to your BMW over Bluetooth not only allows streaming music, but also makes it possible to access incoming texts and calls through your iDrive system.

To do so, your iDrive needs to support the Office feature, which also needs to be switched on. After pairing your BMW and smartphone over Bluetooth, go to your iDrive settings and navigate to the mobile devices page. A settings menu should let you switch Office functionality on and off. If the Office option isn’t shown, your vehicle likely doesn’t have the feature available, meaning you will not be able to access text messages on iDrive.

If text messages still aren’t displayed on your iDrive screen, it’s possible that your phone doesn’t offer iDrive support. BMW’s website features a Bluetooth compatibility checker that lets you enter your vehicle and mobile device to check exactly which features are supported.

What is the BMW Connected app?

Before setting off on a trip, you can look up your destination and easily send directions straight to your iDrive navigation, so you don’t have to set things up in the car. On hot days, you can also activate the air conditioning remotely, to bring your BMW to a comfortable temperature before it’s time to leave.

The BMW Connected app also makes finding your way back to your car much easier. Activate GPS tracking in your iDrive system, and the BMW Connected app will show you exactly where your car is located, so finding your way back to it in a packed parking lot should be a breeze. You also have the option to remotely turn on the lights or honk the horn, giving a few extra ways to locate your vehicle.

Wherever you are, you can also check your vehicle’s status, including fuel levels and whether the doors are locked. Forgot to lock up? Do it remotely through the BMW Connected app, without having to go out to your car.

Is BMW iDrive Android Auto compatible?

Android Auto lets you connect your Android smartphone to your iDrive, and use it to run popular Android apps like Google Maps, Spotify and WhatsApp. For added safety, you can even use Google Assistant to issue voice commands, letting you keep your eyes firmly on the road.

How to delete a BMW iDrive profile?

Before selling a BMW or returning a leased vehicle, it’s advised to delete all this information as part of a full BMW iDrive reset, to ensure it isn’t accessible to the next owner. This can be done through the iDrive menu by going to the «Settings» menu, navigating to the «Profiles» section, selecting your profile(s) and opening «Options», where you will be able to delete all personal data.

Is BMW iDrive touchscreen?

Early iDrive versions were operated entirely or almost entirely by the rotating iDrive control knob, located between the two front seats. This controller could be used to navigate menus and input text by scrolling through the alphabet on screen.

In many of the latest BMWs, you will even find a touchscreen. Whether or not a BMW has a touchscreen depends on its model, navigation version and production year. For example, a BMW F30 3 Series with Navigation System Professional (option S609A) has had a touch-enabled screen since the 2018 model year, whereas the same car with Navigation System Business (option S606A), or an older vehicle, will have a standard, non-touchscreen.

Even BMWs with a touchscreen retain other iDrive navigation and input methods, such as the rotary iDrive controller or voice control. Most drivers are likely to use several methods depending on the situation — touchscreen for entering a destination before setting off, the physical controller when driving so as not to take your eyes off the road.

BONUS iDRIVE HACK

Accessing it depends on your iDrive version. The process is slightly different for CCC iDrives (with the four-way Communication / Navigation / Entertainment / Climate home screen) than later iDrive versions.

To open the hidden menu in CCC iDrive, press the «Menu» button to reach the home screen, then hold the iDrive controller for at least 8 seconds. Afterwards, turn it three clicks to the right, three clicks to the left, one to the right, one to the left and one to the right, then press the controller knob again. The service menu will open.

To activate the hidden menu in CIC / NBT iDrives, press the «Menu» button to reach the home screen, then hold the iDrive controller in the up position for at least 8 seconds. Afterwards, turn it three clicks to the right, three clicks to the left, one to the right, one to the left and one to the right, then press the controller knob again. Your iDrive menu will show a new option, «Service menu», to open the hidden iDrive menu.

Как происходит обновление программного обеспечения автомобиля (ПО) электронных блоков управления.

Обновление программ всех устройств происходит только через диагностический разъём под панелью приборов при помощи специального адаптера ICOM, который подключается к компьютеру, на котором установлена специальное программное обеспечение от концерна БМВ ISTA-P и ISTA-D, которая используется в зависимости от версий. Тем самым все автомобили Е серии остались в ISTA-P, а все F и G серию начали оттуда убирать и переводить в ISTA-D. Для более старых БМВ (1995–2009) используется программа BMW DIS или Progman.

Что такое ICOM?

Адаптер ICOM— это мини-компьютер, который имеет собственный процессор, оперативную память и все необходимые модули для полноценной обработки информации от электронного блока управления автомобиля (ЭБУ). В нем происходит первичная обработка и интерпретация данных, для того чтобы сформировать понятный код, который затем поймет ОС Windows. Также он переводит обратно в понятные для ЭБУ команды от диагностического компьютера.

Что представляет из себя ISTA?

Это лицензионное десктопное приложение, в котором реализован полный набор функций для любых программных действий с электроникой БМВ.

В ней привычным образом для пользователей ПК реализован функционал обмена данными. Очень удобно можно просматривать исправность работы различных систем в визуальном режиме. При неисправности какого-либо узла сразу видно сообщение об ошибке.

Отметим, что в настоящее время полным ходом идет тестирование новой программы для диагностики от MicrosoftVisualStudio — Rheingold/ISTA+D, которая должна полностью вытеснить предыдущие версии. Работает она в среде JAWA и обладает она большей перспективой в плане наращивания дополнительного функционала и большей производительностью. Например, в ней нет необходимости делать обход всех блоков для определения конфигурации оборудования. Достаточно вбить только VIN и тестирование происходит значительно быстрее.

Как обновлять мультимедиа БМВ

Отметим, что обновление ПО в дилерских центрах возможно только в том случае, если на автомобиле не было установлено никакого стороннего оборудования.

Обновлять программное обеспечение можно тремя способами:

• Через собственное соединение мультимедиа системы с интернетом.
• Через USB-разъём.
• Через внешний компьютер, соединенный с блоком управления через специальный разъём.

В первом случае всё просто:

• На телефон приходит смс с сообщением о необходимости обновить ПО.
• Заглушить двигатель.
• Заходим в раздел «Car», далее «Настройки», далее «Общие настройки», далее «Remote software update». Следуем инструкциям. Через 20 минут на автомобиль будет установлено новое программное обеспечение. В течение этого времени ничего делать с автомобилем нельзя.

Во втором случае, немного сложнее:

• При отсутствии интернет-соединения система предложит загрузить данные с внешнего носителя.
• Заходим на страницу bmw.com/update/
• Указываем свой VIN-код.
• Скачиваем предложенные zip-архивы, распаковываем и переносим на флешку.
• Вставляем влешку в разъем. Выбираем устройство на дисплее и нажимаем «обновить».

В третьем случае еще сложнее:

Данный способ подходит в тех случаях, когда нужно выполнить нестандартное обновление или если при обновлении возникли какие-то сложности, что вызвало выход из строя какого-то узла, агрегата или функции автомобиля.

• Firstly, log-in to your My BMW Account using the icon in the site header. Navigate to ‘My Vehicles’.
• Select the vehicle for which you want to download a map update.
• Navigate to ‘Map update’ section. A message will display if a new map version is available. 
• Click ‘To manual map update’ link and download the BMW Update Manager.

After you have downloaded the map update or bought the USB drive with the update from the dealer, you are ready to go into the vehicle. Please leave the USB drive inserted until the end of the update process. After the successful installation of the update, the navigation system will automatically reboot. This completes the update procedure. To check the currently installed map version, please go to ‘Navigation’, select ‘Settings’, ‘Position and version’ and select ‘Version information’.

Why update your navigation maps for 2022?

Part of the reason is the fact that roads are always changing. New roads are being built, old roads are being closed or rerouted, two-way streets are being turned into one-way streets. In some areas, up to 40% of the road network can change from one year to the next.

The last thing you want your BMW GPS map to do is send you down a street that hasn’t existed for five years, or let you spend an hour weaving through an unfamiliar town when there’s a shiny new bypass that could cut your journey time in half. Thousands of miles of new roads are added as part of the BMW iDrive map update every year, so updating your maps means your navigation system is going to work a lot better.

But BMW is also working hard to improve its map data. Earlier versions of the BMW navigation system map update can include mistakes (even Google Maps has a few streets that exist in principle, but in reality are just empty fields), and each subsequent map version is going to iron out more of these issues.

What’s more, a huge number of points of interest are added to the BMW road map each year, including restaurants, gas stations and attractions. If you’re in an unfamiliar area and want to stop off for a bite to eat, having the latest maps on your iDrive will make it easier to use the interactive map to find out what options you have around you.

How often are BMW map updates released?

BMW usually releases up to 3 new versions per year and recommends performing a BMW map update every six months, or annually at the very least.

The frequency of new releases strongly depends on the head unit as well as the country. For example, newer iDrives like NBT Evo ID5/ID6 can get two or three updates annually, while ENTRYNAV can wait for a new BMW navigation update for up to a year. In some regions new map updates are not even released every year so even the newer navigation systems may have to wait.

You can easily check the latest update for your BMW on our website — type in your VIN on the BMW map update page and you will get a list of regions available for your iDrive with years and numbers that stand for the quarter the update was released in.

How to check your BMW map version? Go to your iDrive navigation view, open the settings menu and scroll down to Navigation system version. You will see the region, map version and year of your current map. If it’s more than a year old, it’s time to update.

BMW maps with speed limit information

One more reason to keep your maps up-to-date is to get the latest speed limit information, which can be displayed on your instrument cluster or HUD (if your vehicle is equipped with it). You may think that BMW maps with speed cameras are available only in newer and premium BMW models.

However, if your BMW is not equipped with special cameras but does have a navigation system, you might be able to install a Speed Limit Info Retrofit from BimmerTech. It takes an hour to fit, and also requires a remote BMW coding session done by a BimmerTech technician. The upgrade removes the need for expensive cameras as it uses the updated map info to show the maximum permissible speed on each stretch of road. As the information comes entirely from the nav data, this product is only supported in areas where BMW’s maps include speed limit information. What is the BMW interactive map?

Points of interest make it easy to navigate using the BMW interactive map. Instead of entering the exact address of your destination, the interactive map lets you point to an area and quickly find nearby points of interest. It’s ideal if you don’t remember quite where that restaurant is, or want to find somewhere to stop off in an area you don’t know well.

With the navigation screen open, use the crosshairs icon on the menu to enter interactive mode. Then use the iDrive controller to move the on-screen target to the desired area. Pressing the iDrive controller will give you the option of seeing a list of nearby points of interest, and setting any of them as your destination. With so many new points of interest being added with each map version, updating to the latest available BMW GPS map update is going to make it more likely you’ll find the places you’re looking for.

How to update your BMW maps?

Older iDrive versions stored map data on a DVD that could be switched out for an update. The latest BMWs, however, store the map data on an internal hard drive, which can be updated either by performing a BMW map update download and manually saving the data to the iDrive or (in some vehicles) automatically updated over-the-air by BMW.

In vehicles that require manually updating your navigation’s map data, the process is simple and no BMW coding software or programming is required. The map data is loaded to a USB stick which can be plugged in to the USB port in your BMW’s glove compartment (in older vehicles with the CIC iDrive system) or arm rest (in newer vehicles). The system will automatically detect that there is a new map available to install on the iDrive. You’ll be prompted to enter a BMW-issued FSC activation code with your iDrive controller to begin installation. Everything is done through the USB port, meaning you won’t need to use any BMW iDrive coding software.

When the process is finished, you’ll be good to go. How long does the BMW map update take to upload? Again, It depends on your head unit and the last time you did a BMW navigation update download. The older your map version is, the longer it will take.

How to find BMW map version?

If you aren’t sure what map version you need for your car, checking is easy:

• Go to your iDrive map view.
• Push ‘Option’ button on your iDrive controller.
• Go to ‘Navigation settings’ on your iDrive screen.
• Choose ‘Position and version’.
• Enter ‘Version information’.
• You will see the map region, version and year.

You’ll always need to order a map update of the same version, so Premium maps need Premium updates, Way maps need Way updates etc. In general, you’ll also want to choose the same region as before, to keep the same coverage in your country.

Note that if you would like to travel to another region and still plan your routes through the iDrive, you can just order a new map update* (for Europe, North America, Middle East, Singapore, Malaysia, South America, Australia, New Zealand). In regions like East Asia (Japan, China, Hong Kong, etc. ), however, the procedure is much more difficult and costly.

*NBT Evo head units require an additional conversion file together with the map update.

How to change BMW map regions

Let’s say you bought a BMW from another country and your maps were programmed for the region they were sold in. What can you do to make them suitable for the place you live in? We can do some reprogramming to change your map region remotely. Depending on your car’s original region and the country you’ve brought it to, the procedures will differ, so it’s always good to check beforehand what map region your BMW currently has. You can look it up on your iDrive in ‘Navigation system version’.

Moving to older head units such as NBT or CIC — for some countries the region change might be as simple as buying a map update, but for others it’s a bit more complicated. It may well be that the region change will require replacing your head unit’s hard disk and perhaps some additional coding. Business vs Professional navigation

While picking a vehicle for yourself, you can choose between different BMW sat nav versions: the somewhat more spartan Business navigation, and the more extensive Professional navigation. In addition to superior hardware and greater multimedia capabilities, BMW’s Professional navigation option gives better route-planning and navigation features.

The most noticeable difference is the map interface itself. Professional navigation has always included a 3D map option, which can make finding your bearings when driving easier. Business navigation only offers a simpler, bird’s-eye view look, which some find less intuitive. Professional navigation is also generally more reliable in areas of patchy GPS coverage, as it supplements the positional readings from the GPS signal with internal measurements of your car’s movement.

Are BMW map updates free?

It is possible to find free maps on the Internet, but the moment you try to upload a BMW map update via USB, the system will ask for an FSC code, and without typing it in, you won’t be updating your maps. That’s why it’s always better to acquire updates from trustworthy sources with original BMW codes and technical support that can answer all your questions.

BimmerTech iDrive software update vs. BMW ConnectedDrive software updates

Let’s give you a quick rundown on how it works. There are basically two kinds of BMW iDrive software updates.

• BimmerTech iDrive software update is an update that upgrades the software version (i-Level) of your iDrive system. It is needed when installing some new software or hardware which is only supposed to work with the latest software versions. The update is performed by BimmerTech technician via a remote coding session and takes up to 1h. We strongly advise not to do it without a justifiable reason.
  BMW ConnectedDrive software update, or media software update. This may cover things like multimedia, Bluetooth, Internet connectivity, or mobile compatibility with the latest version of Apple iOS or Samsung/Android system. Any owner can install this kind of update themselves as long as their car features a Combox, which works with iDrive and enhances many technology features in your BMW. Newer NBT and later iDrive systems have Combox functionality built-in, making things even easier. But even older models can be retrofitted with iDrive (at Bimmer-Tech.net) and Combox (check out the BimmerTech Combox Retrofit Kit), adding greater multimedia capabilities.

How do I know if my BMW needs an iDrive software update?

Updating your iDrive software is only required in a limited range of situations. For example, if you want to activate a specific feature (like full-screen mode for Apple CarPlay), but it isn’t supported by your vehicle’s current software version, updating your software could be the answer. It may also be the solution when running into compatibility issues with third-party hardware that isn’t designed to work with older iDrive software versions.

Without a clear goal in mind or a specific problem that needs fixing, your BMW will almost never need a software update.

How long does a BMW iDrive software update take?

Updating your BMW iDrive software only takes around an hour.

During that time, however, your vehicle will need to be connected to a 15A (minimum) battery charger, with the ignition on. Without a charger, you run the risk of having your car cut out during the session, particularly if your battery isn’t already fully charged. If your BMW switches off before the update is complete, it could cause critical errors to your vehicle’s electronics.

BMW ConnectedDrive software update (remote software upgrade)

If your vehicle came with a newer iDrive system from the factory, or is an older vehicle with a factory-installed Combox, you can search for the latest ConnectedDrive software version for your vehicle on BMW’s software update website.

After entering your VIN, BMW will check its records to see which software is already installed in your car. If there is a newer version, you’ll be able to download the file (e. upd07044 or UPD11024) straight from BMW’s website, ready to transfer to a formatted USB flash drive. Inserting the flash drive into the USB port will let you install the software update. You’ll then immediately be able to connect a wider variety of devices to your BMW and start enjoying more multimedia features in your car, without having to take a trip to the dealer.

If there isn’t a more recent version of the software available for your car, BMW’s software update website will tell you so. In that case, a simple software update isn’t going to be enough to add any features you’re missing.

Download Software update via My BMW App

The remote software upgrade is also available via My BMW App. Included in the BMW Connected Drive package, My BMW App is application integrating your Apple or Android smartphone with your car. You can use it for multiple functions, like programming destinations before you get into your car, setting the climate control, unlocking your doors, but also downloading a Remote Software upgrade via Wi-Fi.

Here’s how to do the software upgrade via My BMW App:

• Enter the app and find the Remote Software Upgrade menu.
• Go to Remote Software Upgrade settings and choose the ‘Wi-Fi only’ download.
• Click on ‘Start download’.
• When the download is completed connect your phone to your vehicle via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
• In your iDrive settings, check your connections in the ‘Mobile devices’ menu.
  To establish a Wi-Fi connection click on ‘new device’.Select ‘Internet, apps’.Scan the QR code with your phone.You’ll receive a Wi-Fi token, which you’ll have to accept to establish the connection.
• To establish a Wi-Fi connection click on ‘new device’.

BMW iDrive Coding

If your BMW still lacks important features the third option is coding.

Updating a retrofit iDrive or combox

You will only be able to download and install a software update file from BMW if your Combox or compatible iDrive is factory installed. If you installed the BimmerTech Combox Retrofit Kit or BimmerTech NBT Navigation Retrofit Kit, BMW’s records will still reflect that your car doesn’t have the new hardware, and therefore, won’t show that you qualify for the software update. In that case, all you do is get in touch with us and we’ll get you the official BMW update.

Pretty straight-forward. But there’s one final question: what if you add a Combox or NBT Navigation using a BimmerTech upgrade kit and BMW introduces an essential main software update sometime down the road? No worries. Just remove the Combox/NBT before taking your BMW to your dealer for the update. Then reinstall it when you get it back. If it needs recoding as sometimes happens, just contact our tech team and we’ll get it going again in no time.

Apple fans will also be excited about being able to Retrofit Carplay into an older BMW if they decide on retrofitting NBT EVO with ID5/ID6 into their BMW.
